Gunnar Setser Embarks on 36th Annual Lucas Oil Tulsa Shootout

Gunnar Setser embarked on the tall task of claiming a Golden Driller on Wednesday as the team kicked off the 36th edition of the Lucas Oil Tulsa Shootout at the Tulsa (Okla.) Expo Center.

Gunnar hit the ground running in 600cc Outlaw Winged competition in his Midwest Tube Mills No. 5s The Cure Starts Now Indiana entry. With 264 competitors registered for battle, Gunnar raced from eighth to third in his heat race, which impressively credited him with16th in passing points.

In 600cc Winged Micro action, 403 drivers registered for the event, and Gunnar started on the pole before finishing second. Additionally, on Wednesday Setser passed two cars in 600cc Outlaw Non-Winged Micro action to finish fourth.

Thursday action saw Gunnar again entering three divisions at the racy, 1/5-mile oval, and he started his day by rocketing from the sixth-starting spot to a heat race win in 600cc Non-Winged Micro action. Meanwhile in C-Main action in 600cc Outlaw Non-Winged Micro competition, Gunnar started and finished third in his C-Main.

The only down part of the night for the team happened in 600cc Winged Micro C-Main action, when Setser was spun from the second-and-final transfer spot coming to the checkered flag. He was credited with an 11th-place finish.

On Friday evening the team narrowed their focus to two divisions, with Gunnar racing from the third-starting position to a qualifier win in 600cc Outlaw Winged Micro action to lock into the third-starting position for Saturday's 55-lap finale. He added an eighth-place finish in the evening's 600cc Non Winged Micro competition.

On Saturday afternoon the mega-event drew to a close with Gunnar's bid for a feature starting spot in in 600cc Non-Winged Micro competition coming to an end with a 13th-place finsih in his B-Main.

Putting his sole focus on his first Golden Driller, the 13-year-old racer preppred for the 600cc Outlaw Winged Micro finale. Starting the feature in third, he ran second for the first half of the 55-lap finale before ultimately settling into a fifth-place finish behindCraig Ronk, Thomas Kunsman, Jonathan Beason, and KJ Snow.
